What is the TEF?

The TEF is a test that evaluates your level of French. It is an internationally recognized reference test accepted by many institutions, particularly the immigration services of Canada and France. The test was created by 'le français des affaires', a service of the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The TEF format

The TEF is divided into 5 independent sections. You choose which sections you want to take depending on your objective (see the "uses" section below).

Practical information

You can take the TEF at any approved examination centre. These centres are located worldwide. The multiple-choice sections of the test are generally administered on a computer. Examination centres also have the option to administer the test in paper format. The oral expression section is administered by a TEF examiner in the form of an individual interview.

Uses of the TEF

The TEF is mainly used in the following contexts:

  • TEF Canada for immigrating to Canada
  • TEFAQ for immigrating to Quebec
  • TEF Naturalisation for immigrating to France
  • TEF études en France for studying in France

Many French-speaking schools also use it to measure and certify the French language progress of their international students.

How to register for the TEF?

The TEF is a test of knowledge of the French language. You must be at least 16 years old to take this test.

Registration with an approved centre

Registration for the TEF is done through an approved examination centre.
You can find an updated list of approved centres on the following page.

You must contact the approved centre of your choice, which will provide you with instructions on how to proceed.

How many sections to register for

You choose how many sections you wish to register for. For each purpose (e.g., TEF Canada or TEF études en France), certain sections are mandatory. For example, if your goal is TEF Canada, then you must take at minimum the comprehension sections (oral and written) and the expression sections (oral and written).

Once your registration is complete, you will receive a notification by post giving you the date and time of the test.

If you wish to retake the TEF, you must wait at least two months.

What is the TEF IRN?

The Test

From January 3, 2022, the TEF Naturalisation and TEF Resident tests will be merged into a single test: the TEF IRN (Integration, Residence and Nationality).

Aimed at foreign individuals over 16 years of age, this test is required by the Ministry of the Interior for those who wish to:

  • Obtain French nationality (B1 level required)
  • Acquire a residence permit for one or two years (A1 level required)
  • Obtain a 10-year resident permit (A2 level required)

Regardless of which of the three objectives mentioned above a candidate wishes to achieve, all candidates registered for the TEF IRN take the same test.

The Sections

The TEF IRN includes 4 mandatory sections:

  • Listening comprehension: 17 questions (4 response choices, only one correct answer)
  • Reading comprehension: 13 questions (4 response choices, only one correct answer)
  • Written expression: 2 exercises
  • Oral expression: 2 exercises

Regarding the duration of the test, it lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes in total. The duration of each section is detailed below:

  • Listening comprehension: 10 minutes
  • Reading comprehension: 30 minutes
  • Written expression: 30 minutes
  • Oral expression: 10 minutes

What level must you obtain on the TEF IRN?

When you take the TEF IRN, a minimum score is required to pass the exam depending on your objective.

Currently, the maximum score possible to obtain on the TEF IRN is 349, which corresponds to an achieved B1 level.

OFII Citizenship Path / Republican Integration Contract

For the OFII citizenship path / Republican Integration Contract (CIR), level A1 is required.

TEF Score = 100 - 199

Resident Card

If your objective is to obtain a resident card, you will need to reach level A2.
TEF Score = 200-299

French Nationality

If your objective is to obtain French nationality, level B1 is required.
TEF Score = 300-349

What is the TEF CANADA?

Whether you are a student or an employee, if you wish to study or work in Canada, you have surely already heard of TEF Canada. This Test of French Language Evaluation assesses your French language proficiency, whether for academic purposes, for a student who wishes to enter a university, or for professional purposes, such as someone who wants to join a company.

The TEF Canada, not to be confused with the TEF IRN (for obtaining French nationality) or the TEFAQ (for immigrating to Quebec), is intended for those wishing to immigrate and work throughout the Canadian territory: it is mandatory to obtain Canadian citizenship.

The test evaluates your level based on the CLB scale, the Canadian Language Benchmarks.

What does the test look like?

The format of the TEF exam varies depending on your objective. If you wish to immigrate to Canada, you will need to take a listening and reading comprehension test as well as an oral and written expression test. A citizenship application, however, only requires taking a listening comprehension and oral expression test. The test is conducted on a computer or on paper, depending on the examination centers.

Reading comprehension lasts 60 minutes: there are 40 questions for a total of 699 points.
Listening comprehension lasts 40 minutes: there are 40 questions for a total of 699 points.
Written expression lasts 60 minutes: there are two topics to address for a total of 699 points.
Oral expression lasts 15 minutes: there are two topics to address for a total of 699 points.

TEF Results

Your results will be sent to you by email within 4 to 6 weeks following the tests. You will receive the score for each section and a score between 0+ and 7, corresponding to the CEFR scale. Your certificate will take some time: you will also receive it by email
