Whether you are a student or an employee, if you wish to study or work in Canada, you have surely already heard of TEF Canada. This Test of French Language Evaluation assesses your French language proficiency, whether for academic purposes, for a student who wishes to enter a university, or for professional purposes, such as someone who wants to join a company.
The TEF Canada, not to be confused with the TEF IRN (for obtaining French nationality) or the TEFAQ (for immigrating to Quebec), is intended for those wishing to immigrate and work throughout the Canadian territory: it is mandatory to obtain Canadian citizenship.
The test evaluates your level based on the CLB scale, the Canadian Language Benchmarks.
What does the test look like?
The format of the TEF exam varies depending on your objective. If you wish to immigrate to Canada, you will need to take a listening and reading comprehension test as well as an oral and written expression test. A citizenship application, however, only requires taking a listening comprehension and oral expression test. The test is conducted on a computer or on paper, depending on the examination centers.
Reading comprehension lasts 60 minutes: there are 40 questions for a total of 699 points.
Listening comprehension lasts 40 minutes: there are 40 questions for a total of 699 points.
Written expression lasts 60 minutes: there are two topics to address for a total of 699 points.
Oral expression lasts 15 minutes: there are two topics to address for a total of 699 points.
