What is the TEF test? 

TEF is a test that assesses your level of French. It is an internationally recognized reference test accepted by many institutions, particularly the immigration services of Canada and France. The test was created by French for Business, a service of the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

 

The TEF format 

 

TEF is divided into 5 independent sections. You choose the sections you wish to take based on your objective (see the “uses” section below). 

 

Practical information 

 

You can take TEF at any authorized examination center. These centers are located worldwide. The test’s multiple-choice sections are generally administered on a computer. Examination centers may also administer the test in paper format. The speaking section is administered by a TEF examiner in the form of an individual interview. 

 

Uses of TEF 

 

TEF is primarily used in the following contexts. 

 

  • TEF Canada to immigrate to Canada 
  • TEFAQ to immigrate to Quebec 
  • TEF Naturalization to immigrate to France
  • TEF for studies in France to pursue a course of study in France

Many French-speaking schools also use it to measure and certify their international students’ progress in French.

How do I register for the TEF? 

TEF is a French-language proficiency test. You must be at least 16 years old to take this test. 

 

Registration with an accredited center

 

Registration for the TEF is completed through an accredited examination center. 

You will find an up-to-date list of accredited centers on the following page. 

 

You must contact the accredited center of your choice, which will tell you what steps to follow.

 

How many sections should you register for?  

 

You choose how many sections you wish to register for. For each purpose (e.g., TEF Canada or TEF for studies in France), certain sections are mandatory. For example, if your goal is TEF Canada, you must take at least the comprehension sections (oral and written) and the expression sections (oral and written). 

 

Once you have registered, you will receive a test appointment notice by mail stating the date and time of the test. 

 

If you wish to retake the TEF, you must wait at least two months.

What is the TEF IRN?

The test 

 

As of January 3, 2022, the TEF Naturalisation and TEF Resident tests will be merged into a single test: the TEF IRN (Integration, Residence and Nationality). 

 

Intended for foreign nationals over the age of 16, this test is required by the Ministry of the Interior for those who wish to: 

  • Obtain French nationality (B1 level required)
  • Obtain a one- or two-year residence permit (A1 level required)
  • Obtain a 10-year resident permit (A2 level required)

Regardless of which of the three objectives mentioned above a candidate wishes to achieve, all candidates registered for the TEF IRN take the same test.

 

The sections 

 

The TEF IRN comprises 4 compulsory sections: 

 

  • Oral comprehension: 17 questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer)
  • Written comprehension: 13 questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer)
  • Written expression: 2 exercises 
  • Oral expression: 2 exercises

 

The test lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes in total. The duration of each section is detailed below: 

  • Oral comprehension: 10 minutes
  • Written comprehension: 30 minutes 
  • Written expression: 30 minutes
  • Oral expression: 10 minutes

What level do you need to achieve on the TEF IRN?

When you take the TEF IRN, the minimum score required to pass the exam depends on your objective. 

 

At present, the highest score that can be obtained when taking the TEF IRN is 349, which corresponds to an acquired B1 level. 

 

OFII civic integration program / Republican Integration Contract 

 

For the OFII civic integration program / Republican Integration Contract (CIR), level A1 is required. 

TEF score = 100 - 199

 

Resident card 

 

If your goal is to obtain a resident card, you will need to reach level A2. 

TEF score = 200-299 

 

French nationality

 

If your goal is to obtain French nationality, level B1 is required.

TEF score = 300-349

What is the TEF Canada?

Whether you are a student or an employee, if you would like to go to Canada to study or work, you have probably already heard of the TEF Canada. This French Evaluation Test assesses your command of the French language, whether for academic purposes, such as for a student wishing to enroll at a university, or professional purposes, such as for someone wanting to join a company. 

 

The TEF Canada, which should not be confused with the TEF IRN (for obtaining French nationality) or the TEFAQ (for immigrating to Quebec), is intended for those wishing to immigrate and work anywhere in Canada: it is mandatory for obtaining Canadian citizenship.

The test assesses your level according to the NCLC scale, the Canadian Language Benchmarks. 

 

What does the test look like? 

 

The format of the TEF components varies depending on your objective. If you wish to immigrate to Canada, you will have to take a listening and reading comprehension test, as well as a speaking and writing test. However, a citizenship application only requires you to take a listening comprehension and speaking test. The test is taken on a computer or on paper, depending on the examination centers. 

 

  • Reading comprehension lasts 60 minutes: there are 40 questions for a total of 699 points.
  • Listening comprehension lasts 40 minutes: there are 40 questions for a total of 699 points.
  • Writing lasts 60 minutes: there are two tasks to complete for a total of 699 points.
  • Speaking lasts 15 minutes: there are two tasks to complete for a total of 699 points.

 

TEF results

 

You will receive your results by email within 4 to 6 weeks after taking the test. You will receive the score for each component and a score ranging from 0+ to 7, corresponding to the CEFR scale. Your certificate will take a little longer: you will also receive it by email.
