Frequently Asked Questions

What does the TOEIC® contain?

The TOEIC® L&R is an English test designed to assess the written and oral comprehension skills of a non-English speaker in a business setting.
The test lasts 120 minutes and is divided into two sections:

  • The “Listening” section: comprehension which lasts 45 minutes.
  • The “Reading” section: written comprehension which lasts 75 minutes.

Each section consists of 100 questions divided into parts.

The “Listening” section: oral comprehension

An English recording containing the statement and answers allows you to answer the questions. You must follow the rhythm of the audiotape.

This section is divided into 4 parts:

  • Questions about image descriptions
  • Listening to questions and answers (short conversations)
  • Listening to dialogues (long conversations)
  • Listening to short presentations

The “Reading” section: written comprehension

The "Reading" section is the final part of the exam. It lasts 1 hour 15 minutes and is divided into three parts:

  • Sentences to complete
  • Texts to be completed
  • Reading multiple written contents

It's important to stay focused for this final section. We recommend taking full practice tests to get used to the intensity of the exam.

4 reasons to do specific preparation to pass your TOEIC®

  1. Familiarize yourself with the test format and the instructions for each part:
From one TOEIC® session to the next, the format remains the same, and the instructions for the 7 parts of the TOEIC® remain identical. You should know them; you won't have to reread them, saving you time and energy.
  2. Getting familiar with the rhythm of the audio track:
The TOEIC® includes a "Listening" section. It lasts 45 minutes without interruption. Aside from the accent, you must get used to the narrators' speaking rhythm and the sequence of questions. You cannot listen to the question again or pause the audiotape. This constraint is amplified in parts 1 and 2 because the questions and suggested answers are not written on the booklet. To avoid the frustration of being overwhelmed by the pace of the tape, we recommend practicing with our TOEIC® practice tests.
  3. Familiarize yourself with TOEIC® vocabulary:
The TOEIC® is a test that always uses the same type of vocabulary with a consistent level of difficulty throughout the test (B2-C1). Our online preparation lists all the vocabulary words that come up frequently on the test. The practice exercises will help you master these terms and truly remember them. Beyond passing the test, this vocabulary will allow you to feel comfortable in the workplace. Remember that the TOEIC® tests your ability to understand English in a business setting.
  4. Practice with TOEIC®-type questions
The TOEIC® tests a limited number of concepts, and certain types of questions come up very regularly. Identifying these questions and developing strategies to answer them easily will allow you to answer more quickly and accurately. Developing these reflexes is made easier by a little cramming with TOEIC® questions categorized by category.

Can you retake the TOEIC® several times?

The TOEIC® is a test that can be taken as many times as desired. It is paid for by the American administrator ETS.

Thanks to the TOEIC®, you obtain a certification that demonstrates your level of English.

The TOEIC® can be taken as part of your training or your company. In this case, your institution may cover part or all of the registration fees.
Some schools offer students a retake. For those who do not achieve the required score, the student is responsible for retaking the exam.
You can also take this test as an independent candidate. Simply register on ETS.
The TOEIC® score depends on your school and your goals. Some schools require a minimum score of 785/900, while some companies require a minimum score of 850.
