TOEFL iBT Writing - Overview

According to official instructions the TOEFL IBT Writing assesses the candidate's ability to use writing to communicate in an academic environment.

TOEFL IBT Writing - Structure

The test TOEFL IBT Writing lasts 60 minutes ( how the TOEFL IBT works ) and counts 2 types of questions that you must deal with:

• Integrated Writing Task (Synthesis): You listen to an audio tape and then read a text. You must then produce a synthesis of the two (300 to 440 words)
• Independent Writing Task (Essay): You answer a question asked (150 to 225 words)

The answers to these questions are in the form of an essay. It does not require any specific knowledge in a specific field. However, structuring your answer is essential. You are evaluated on the depth of your knowledge. vocabulary and how you present your ideas.

TOEFL IBT Writing - Strategies for Success

Tip #1: Know the typical questions well

Official question designers must follow precise specifications to create questions. There are therefore a limited number of question types. Questions of the same type are all structured in the same way. Know the different types of questions  and the methods which allow you to solve them will allow you to save points and time.

Tip #2: Structure your ideas

THE TOEFL IBT Writing does not assess your knowledge on a specific subject but your written expression as well as your ability to structure your ideas.

Whether for synthesis or essay, you must master the "linking words . " They will allow you to easily express your ideas and segment your writing. The summary question is linked to a specific topic. Your opinion is not necessary. You must focus on using only the elements of the text and the course to create your arguments. The text opposes or reinforces the arguments highlighted in the audio passage.

Tip #3: Adapt to the evaluation criteria
