How long is the TOEFL IBT test?
The TOEFL IBT currently lasts about 2 hours (since 2023). It includes 4 sections assessed in the following order:
- Reading: 35 minutes. Reading and understanding academic texts.
- Listening: 36 minutes. Comprehension of lectures and conversations in a university context.
- Speaking: 16 minutes. Oral expression on independent and integrated topics.
- Writing: 29 minutes. Writing an integrated task and an academic discussion.
The test is conducted in a single session, with no official break. The total duration may vary slightly depending on the version and testing conditions (center or Home Edition).
A significant reduction compared to previous versions
Before 2023, the TOEFL IBT lasted about 4 hours, with more questions per section and a 10-minute break after the Listening section. The current format is considerably shorter, making it less physically demanding for candidates.
Score and validity
The TOEFL IBT is scored from 0 to 120 (30 points per section). Results are delivered within 4 to 6 business days. The score is valid for 2 years from the test date.
