What is TAGE MAGE?
The TAGE MAGE (Test of Aptitude for Business Studies and Management) is a test used as a selection tool for entry into many business, management, and administration schools. It assesses three categories of aptitude:
- Verbal skills (text comprehension and expression);
- Problem solving (calculation and handling of numerical data);
- Logical reasoning (chains, deductions, logical structures).
Approximately 16,000 candidates take the TAGE MAGE exam each year. This test is primarily aimed at:
- For students in Bac +3 or Bac +4 (L3, M1 or M2) who wish to integrate a master's level course in a business, management or administration school through parallel admission;
-
For candidates for Specialized Masters or MBAs from leading schools.
Organized by the FNEGE (National Foundation for the Teaching of Business Management), the test can be taken several times a year, with a limit of two sessions per year.
Once obtained, the TAGE MAGE is valid for 2 years (the year the test is taken and the following year).
Other versions of the TAGE MAGE
In addition to the TAGE MAGE, there are other versions of the TAGE test:
- The TAGE POST BAC is intended for people wishing to enter a business or management course at Bac +1;
- TAGE 2 intended for Bac +2 students wishing to apply for a Licence or Bachelor’s degree;
- The TAGE EXECUTIVE is aimed at working professionals who wish to join a continuing education course.
The TAGE MAGE tests
The TAGE MAGE consists of six subtests that assess three types of skills: verbal ability, problem solving, and logical reasoning.
All subtests are presented in the form of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) including 15 questions to be answered in 20 minutes (5 answer options, of which only one is correct). You therefore have 2 hours to answer 90 questions.
Subtest 1: Reading Comprehension
This first test includes three texts, each with five questions. It assesses your ability to quickly read a text, identify key information, facts, and connections. It also measures your ability to identify the author's intention or argument and summarize the text.
Subtest 2: Calculation
The questions in the numeracy subtest are written in everyday language. To solve the problems, you must translate the statements into equations. The test assesses both your knowledge of arithmetic, geometry, and algebra (grade 9 level) and your ability to formulate an equation from a statement.
Subtest 3: Reasoning and Argumentation
The questions in this section address everyday situations or opinions from the media. The statements can be vague (in which case you must choose the best answer from among five options) or explicit (you must find the unique solution). The test does not require knowledge of formal logic, but rather assesses your reasoning skills, judgment, and common sense.
Subtest 4: Minimum Conditions
Each question in this section presents an incomplete statement, accompanied by two pieces of information marked (1) and (2). You must determine whether the problem can be solved using one piece of information, the other, both pieces of information together, each piece of information separately, or neither piece of information. This test assesses your formal reasoning, as well as your ability to identify relevant data and exclude unnecessary data.
Subtest 5: Expression
The questions in the expression section involve completing, correcting, or rephrasing sentences. The goal is to test your ability to identify and correct clumsiness in a text, to rephrase a message, and to perceive the coherence of an interlocutor's speech by completing it.
Subtest 6: Logic
The questions in this test focus on the analysis of numerical or spatial data. You must identify a common criterion across several pieces of information or, conversely, exclude a criterion that differentiates them. The goal is to measure your ability to group information by identifying relevant data and discarding unnecessary elements.
Understanding the notation
The final score of the TAGE MAGE is marked out of 600 points.
As a reminder, the test is presented in the form of a multiple-choice questionnaire, with 5 possible answers, only one of which is correct:
- Each correct answer is worth 4 points;
- Each wrong answer or no answer is worth 0 points.
All 6 tests contain 90 questions, the score out of 360 points is then converted into a mark out of 600 points.
In practice, the average score for candidates is between 300 and 350 points (out of 600).
A score above 400 points is considered very good, while a score below 300 is generally poor or insufficient.
Each school sets its own selection criteria. For example, Audencia and EM Lyon require at least 350 points for admission. Other institutions set different coefficients for each section. Depending on the business or management school you're targeting, find out the coefficients for the exams or the minimum TAGE MAGE score required.
How to train for the TAGE MAGE?
Although the test is demanding, targeted TAGE MAGE preparation can help you achieve a good score. The main goal is to learn how to manage your time and familiarize yourself with the instructions.
Time management is essential, as you only have 20 minutes to answer the 15 questions in each subtest, for an average of 1 minute and 20 seconds per question. Therefore, you must develop automatic responses to answer effectively. Familiarizing yourself with the question types also helps you avoid wasting time unnecessarily on test day.
Ideally, spread your TAGE MAGE training over several weeks. This way, you can create a schedule, setting aside time to review each of the six subtests and time to take practice tests.
To practice, you can opt for online preparation. The PrepMyFuture platform offers, in partnership with the FNEGE (the test creator), a complete TAGE MAGE preparation program including 91 course sheets, 150 math refresher exercises, and 9 official practice test subjects. This is the only TAGE MAGE training program to include so many official subjects with detailed answer keys.
Please note: Prepmyfuture also offers the preparation for the TAGE 2 test as well as to the preparation for the TAGE POST BAC test in partnership with FNEGE.
How to register for the exam?
To register for the TAGE MAGE, you must first create an account on the official test website by entering your email address. You can then complete the registration form and pay the registration fee (by credit card) from your personal account. The registration fee for the TAGE MAGE is 70 euros (140 euros for sessions taken abroad).
You will be able to access important information (summons, results, etc.) by logging into your account.
The invitation will be sent to you approximately 15 days before the test date (you must present a printed copy of your invitation on the day).
Where to take the test?
The TAGE MAGE test can be taken at an examination center. There are about twenty in France, a list of which can be found on the official test website. You must select your examination center and date when you register. Sessions are held year-round.
Please note that you can only register for a TAGE MAGE session twice during a calendar year and once per semester (from January to June and from July to December).
Why take the TAGE MAGE?
The TAGE MAGE is used by many business, management and administration schools (IAE) to select candidates for entry into Master's, Specialized Master's or MBA programs.
In France, more than fifty establishments require a TAGE MAGE score as part of their parallel admission process, notably in the Passerelle (ESC Rennes, ESC Dijon, Grenoble EM, Sup de Co La Rochelle) or Ecricome (Kedge BS, Neoma BS, ICN BS) competitions.
Taking the TAGE MAGE allows you to access selective training courses without going through a preparatory class and to enhance your application file.
Your score is valid for two years, so you can submit it to multiple schools or keep it for future applications.
Tips for passing the TAGE MAGE
Obtaining a high score on the TAGE MAGE requires regular training and perfect mastery of the different tests.
Before you begin your TAGE MAGE preparation, set a target score with a realistic goal. This estimate will help you better manage your time. For example, if you're aiming for 350 points, you need to correctly answer 8 out of 15 questions per subtest.
At the end of each training session, compare your results to your goal. If you're still far from your target score, keep trying. If you're progressing quickly, you can gradually raise your goal. Likewise, take the time to correct your exercises. Understanding your mistakes is the only way to identify your weaknesses and improve.
It's perfectly normal to experience difficulty with certain parts of the test. The key is to stay focused and not get discouraged.
