What is the SIELE?

SIELE (Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española) is a fully digital Spanish-language certification that assesses candidates’ level of proficiency in the language, regardless of their country. It is promoted by the Instituto Cervantes, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the University of Salamanca, and the University of Buenos Aires.

Multilevel, SIELE assesses the four language skills on a scale aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), from A1 to C1, and takes into account the different varieties of Spanish spoken around the world.

The SIELE Global certificate is valid for 5 years.

SIELE formats

SIELE is modular: you can take the complete exam or only certain skills, depending on your needs.

SIELE Global

The complete exam, which assesses the four skills (reading, listening, written and oral expression). It results in a certificate valid for 5 years.

Independent terms (S1 to S5)

Combinations of one or more skills that result in a scoring report (Informe) rather than a certificate. Useful if you only need to validate certain skills.

The SIELE exams

The SIELE Global consists of four computer-based tests.

Reading comprehension (written comprehension)

≈ 60 min · 5 tasks

You read different types of texts and answer multiple-choice and matching questions.

Listening comprehension (oral comprehension)

≈ 55 min · 6 tasks

You listen to various recordings (conversations, announcements, presentations) and answer multiple-choice and matching questions.

Written expression and interaction (written expression)

≈ 50 min · 2 tasks

You write two texts based on instructions in common communication situations.

Oral expression and interaction (oral expression)

≈ 15–20 min · 5 tasks

You record your oral responses based on instructions displayed on the screen; there is no face-to-face examiner.

Understand the rating

Each of the four skills is scored out of 250 points, for a total score ranging from 0 to 1,000 points (SIELE Global). Each skill corresponds to a CEFR level, from A1 to C1; the comprehension tests may also result in “below A1.”

You will receive your results in approximately three weeks. The SIELE Global exam results in a certificate (valid for 5 years) indicating your overall score and your level in each skill; the independent modalities provide a scoring report.

How to register for the SIELE exam

Visit the official SIELE website and create your candidate account.

Choose the format (SIELE Global or an independent format), then an authorized exam center and a date, or the remotely proctored option if available.

Enter your information and pay the registration fee online.

Registration is done on the official siele.org website. It is recommended that you book your session a few weeks in advance.

Where can I take the SIELE?

The SIELE is taken on a computer at one of the many approved examination centers located around the world. Depending on your circumstances, a remote option with online proctoring may also be available.
