01

What is the TOEFL iBT?

The TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language – Internet-Based Test) is an academic English certification designed and administered by ETS. It measures your ability to understand and use English in an academic setting.

Accepted by more than 12,000 institutions in over 160 countries, it is primarily intended for students who wish to enroll in an English-language program, particularly at North American universities.

Since 2023, the test has been shortened to less than two hours. Its results are valid for 2 years.

02

TOEFL iBT Test Delivery Methods

The TOEFL iBT is taken on a computer, with two options to choose from:

TOEFL iBT (at a test center)

Taken on a computer at an authorized testing center under supervision.

TOEFL iBT Home Edition

The same test, taken at home on your computer, under real-time online supervision. Available in most countries.

03

The TOEFL iBT sections

The test assesses the four skills in four sections, in this order.

Reading (reading comprehension)
≈ 35 min · 2 passages

You read two university-level passages and answer multiple-choice questions about their ideas, vocabulary, and structure.

Listening (listening comprehension)
≈ 36 min

You listen to excerpts from lectures and campus conversations, then answer multiple-choice questions.

Speaking (oral expression)
≈ 16 min · 4 tasks

Your responses are recorded through a microphone:

  • 1 independent task— express your opinion on a familiar topic
  • 3 integrated tasks— read and/or listen, then speak
Writing (written expression)
≈ 29 min · 2 tasks

Two writing tasks:

  • Integrated task— read a text, listen to an excerpt, then write (≈ 20 min)
  • Writing for an Academic Discussion— respond to an online discussion (≈ 10 min)
04

Understand the rating

Each section is scored from 0 to 30 points, for a total score ranging from 0 to 120. There is no “passing” score: each university or organization sets the minimum score it requires.

Your results will be available online in approximately 4 to 8 days and will remain valid for 2 years. Be sure to check the score required by the institutions you are applying to.

07

Where can I take the TOEFL iBT?

The TOEFL iBT is administered at numerous authorized test centers worldwide, or at home through the Home Edition, with online proctoring. Test sessions are offered regularly throughout the year.

08

Why take the TOEFL iBT?

The TOEFL iBT is one of the most widely accepted English tests for university admissions, particularly in North America.

It is often required to apply to an English-language program, obtain a scholarship, or get a student visa. A good score opens access to a wide range of institutions.

Because it assesses all four skills in an academic context, it accurately reflects your ability to pursue studies in English.

09

Tips for succeeding on the TOEFL iBT

A good understanding of the format and regular practice make all the difference on the day.

01

02

Work on your note-taking: it is allowed and essential for the Listening, Speaking, and Writing sections.

03

Familiarize yourself with academic English (classes, lectures) and expand your vocabulary.

04

Practice on a computer, under timed conditions, using scored practice tests to manage your pace.
