What is the TOEFL ITP?

The TOEFL ITP is one of the existing versions of the TOEFL. It is a test that reliably assesses the English language skills of students whose native language is not English. It is a multiple-choice paper-based test administered at a higher education institution and is based solely on academic content. It is used in the case of an academic exchange abroad.

Please note:

Unlike the TOEFL iBT, the TOEFL ITP is intended for educational institutions only; that is, you cannot take it as an independent candidate. It is only used for managing academic exchanges, when partner institutions have decided to accept it.

The TOEFL ITP only assesses listening and reading comprehension, while the TOEFL iBT also assesses speaking and writing. Finally, the TOEFL ITP is shorter and considered easier than the TOEFL iBT.

The TOEFL ITP tests

Listening

  • 50 questions divided into 3 parts
  • 35 minutes
  • Rated out of 68 points

The Listening section is a stand-alone section that accounts for one-third of your TOEFL ITP score. You must answer the questions in the order and rhythm of the audio. The section is divided into three exercises:

  • Section A: Short Conversations - 30 Independent Questions
  • Section B: Long Conversations - 2 long conversations and 4 questions per conversation
  • Section C: University courses - 3 long monologues and 4 questions per monologue

Structure and written expression

  • 40 questions divided into 2 parts
  • 25 minutes
  • Rated out of 68 points

The "Structure and Written Expression" section is a stand-alone section. This is the part of the TOEFL that assesses your grammar. You can answer the questions in any order and divide your time as you wish between the two exercises:

  • Part 1: Sentence completion: 15 independent questions
  • Part 2: Identify the error: 25 independent questions

Reading

  • 50 questions divided into 5 parts
  • 55 minutes
  • Rated out of 67 points

The section consists of five independent texts. Each text is followed by ten questions. The texts are excerpts from university textbooks on various topics (sociology, history, literature, biology, etc.).
