01

What is the TOEIC?

The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is a standardised certification that measures the ability of non-native speakers to communicate in English in a professional context.

Recognised by more than 14,000 companies, training institutions and government bodies worldwide, the TOEIC is aimed mainly at working adults (employees, people retraining or relocating) and jobseekers, as well as students, particularly in business schools and universities, where a good score is often required to enter a selective programme or validate a degree.

Once obtained, the TOEIC is valid for 2 years.

02

The 4 versions of the TOEIC

The TOEIC comes in several versions, suited to different needs and levels:

Listening & Reading

Assesses listening and reading comprehension. It is the most common version of the TOEIC.

Speaking & Writing

Assesses speaking and writing. The two tests can be taken separately or in a single session.

4-Skills

Adaptive online version measuring all four skills: listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing.

Bridge

Measures reading and listening comprehension, with simplified vocabulary and structures. Designed for beginner to intermediate levels (A1 to B1).

03

The TOEIC test sections

The structure of the test sections varies depending on the version.

  • Part 5— Incomplete sentences
  • Part 6— Text completion
  • Part 7— Reading comprehension

Understanding the scoring

Each version of the TOEIC has its own scoring system. The scores obtained are then mapped onto the European CEFR scale (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

For the TOEIC Listening & Reading, each part is scored out of 495 points (minimum 5 points), for a total of 990 points. The final score, between 10 and 990, is the sum of the two parts. Here is the correspondence with the CEFR levels:

TOEIC Listening & Reading

Each section is graded out of 495 points (minimum 5 points), for a total of 990 points. The final score, between 10 and 990, is the sum of the two sections.

Where to take the TOEIC?

The TOEIC can be taken in many approved centres around the world. The ETS Global website offers an interactive map to find a test centre near you; sessions are held throughout the year, in France and abroad.

Depending on the centre, you can take the test on computer or on paper.

08

Why take the TOEIC?

The TOEIC is one of the most respected English certifications in the world. It is a benchmark for assessing your level of English in a professional context.

Many higher education institutions (business schools, engineering schools, universities) require a minimum TOEIC score for admission or to validate a degree: taking it is therefore an essential step to enter a selective programme.

The TOEIC may also be required by recruiters, particularly in sectors where a command of professional English is essential (tourism, international trade, etc.). A good score supports your application and helps you stand out.

Finally, if you are learning English, the TOEIC is an excellent way to measure your progress.

09

Tips to succeed in the TOEIC

As with any language preparation, an excellent knowledge of the test format and good time management will be decisive in succeeding in the TOEIC.

01

Familiarise yourself with the instructions of your chosen version: each format follows a defined structure with recurring question types. Dedicated preparation gives you access to sample exercises and the audio recordings of the Listening section.

02

Set aside enough revision hours to practise with mock tests under real conditions: this is essential to learn how to manage your time and gain efficiency.

03

Focus your revision on workplace vocabulary and work on each skill regularly, according to your strengths and weaknesses. Only daily practice of English, both spoken and written, will help you progress and reach your target score!
