01

What is the DELF B1?

The DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française) certifies your level of French according to the CEFR. Issued by France Éducation international, it is recognised worldwide by administrations, employers and academic institutions. This article covers the main version, the general DELF, intended for adults and teenagers over 16.

The DELF B1, intermediate (threshold) level, is required in particular to obtain French nationality. It attests that you are able to describe a variety of topics simply, write clear and organised texts, understand factual information and follow conversations on familiar topics.

Levels C1 and C2 fall under the DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française). Once obtained, the DELF B1 is valid for life.

03

Oral production

  • Guided interview— introduce yourself and talk about yourself (2 to 3 min)
  • Expressing a point of view— role-play on an everyday situation (3 to 4 min)
  • Interactive task— structured talk based on a short document (3 to 4 min)

Understanding the scoring

Each test is graded out of 25 points, for a total of 100 points. To pass, you must obtain at least 5/25 in each test (a lower score is disqualifying) and an overall score of at least 50/100.

The group tests assess your compliance with the instructions, the coherence and fluency of your discourse, your lexical and grammatical competence and spelling; the oral test assesses vocabulary, morphosyntax and the phonological system (speech rate and pronunciation).

Once obtained, the DELF B1 is valid for life.

Tips to succeed in the DELF B1

To pass the DELF B1 and obtain at least 50/100, prepare in advance and make sure the B1 level matches your current level and your goal.

01

Work on all four skills: listen to podcasts and videos, read every day, write short texts and talk with native speakers (record yourself).

02

Read the instructions carefully: in listening comprehension, answer the simple questions first then adjust on the second listening; in reading comprehension, leave time to review.

03

In written production, organise your ideas on a draft; when speaking, stay confident, look at the examiner and use logical connectors.

04

Practise under real conditions with mock tests and analyse your mistakes to identify your areas for improvement.
