What is DELF B2 ?

The DELF is a diploma, accessible to all, which assesses mastery of the French language according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Awarded by France Éducation International under the aegis of the French Ministry of National Education, it enjoys worldwide recognition. Several versions of the DELF exist depending on the age and profile of the candidate: DELF "Junior / School", DELF "Prim" and DELF "Pro".

The "general public" version, which is aimed at adults and adolescents, is the one discussed in this article. It offers different CEFR levels, including B2. The DELF B2 "general public" version is often required for admission to French-speaking higher education institutions.

Obtaining the DELF B2, an advanced independent level, attests to your ability to argue, express and defend a point of view, reformulate ideas, take notes effectively, correct yourself independently and understand the essentials of current events in French.

This diploma is valid for life.

DELF B2 exams

The exam assesses the four fundamental skills through three group tests and one individual test.

Listening comprehension

The listening comprehension section consists of listening to audio documents (dialogues, public announcements, radio broadcasts, etc.) and then answering multiple-choice or short-answer questions. The assessment lasts 30 minutes and consists of two exercises:

  • Exercise 1: listen to a long recording such as a presentation, a conference, a documentary, a speech (two listenings);
  • Exercise 2: listen to a short recording such as an interview, a news bulletin, a short report (one listening session).

Reading comprehension

In the reading comprehension section, the candidate reads several written documents (newspaper articles, brochures, etc.), answers comprehension questions (multiple choice, short answer, true/false) and then justifies their answers. The assessment lasts 60 minutes and is divided into 2 exercises:

  • Exercise 1: understand an informative text on France or the French-speaking world;
  • Exercise 2: understanding an argumentative text.

Written production

The written production test lasts 60 minutes and consists of writing an argumentative text of at least 250 words (contribution to a debate, formal letter, critical article or report).

Oral production

This individual test lasts a total of 20 minutes (with 30 minutes of preparation) and takes place in front of two examiners. The oral production test includes two activities:

  • Monologue (5 to 7 minutes): defend a reasoned point of view, after having drawn two subjects at random and having chosen one. The candidate has 30 minutes to prepare the oral production;
  • Interactive exercise: exchange and debate with the examiners on the subject.

Understanding the notation

Each test is worth 25 points, for a total of 100 points. To pass, the candidate must obtain:

  • at least 5/25 in each skill (a score lower than 5/25 in one of the tests is eliminatory);
  • an overall score of at least 50/100.

The assessors examine compliance with instructions, sociolinguistic adequacy, the ability to present facts and argue, coherence of speech, lexical and grammatical skills in French, as well as pronunciation.
