01

What is the TEF Canada?

The TEF Canada is one of the five versions of the TEF, a benchmark language certification issued by the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It assesses the French command of non-French speakers, in writing and speaking.

Recognised by IRCC since 2002, this test is an official assessment required for anyone wishing to immigrate to Canada or apply for Canadian nationality.

Open to anyone over 16, regardless of country of origin or mother tongue, it attests to your overall command of French. The score report is valid for two years from its issue date.

03

The TEF Canada tests

This version includes four mandatory tests: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, oral expression and written expression.

Reading comprehension
60 min · 40 questions (MCQ)

Assesses your ability to read and understand written documents from everyday, professional or academic situations. MCQ with 4 options, only one correct.

Listening comprehension

Based on audio documents, it measures your ability to understand spoken French in various contexts. Four sections, MCQ with 4 options, only one correct.

  • Section B— express and justify your point of view, min. 200 words (35 min)
Oral expression

Understanding the scoring

The TEF Canada includes tests scored separately, each on a scale of 0 to 699 points. The scoring places your level on two official scales: the CEFR (A1 to C2) and the Canadian Language Benchmarks (NCLC/CLB, 1 to 12). The scores and both references appear on the score report.

The comprehension tests (reading and listening) are MCQs; the number of correct answers is converted into a score adjusted for difficulty. The expression tests (writing and speaking) are marked by two independent assessors using standardised grids.

Score
Niveau CECRL
0 à 99 A1 non atteint
100 à 199 A1
200 à 299 A2
300 à 399 B1
400 à 499 B2
500 à 599 C1
600 à 699 C2

For an immigration application, the required level depends on the programme: Express Entry generally requires NCLC/CLB 7 in all skills, while Francophone Mobility may accept NCLC/CLB 5.

For a Canadian citizenship application, a minimum of NCLC/CLB 4 is required for listening and oral expression. Check the IRCC website for detailed requirements.
