What is the TEF IRN?

A specific version of the Test d’Évaluation de Français for integration, residence and nationality, the TEF IRN is aimed at non-French speakers over 16 who are engaged in French administrative procedures. Issued by the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry, this certification has the official recognition of the French Ministry of the Interior.

The certificate is valid for 2 years from the exam date.

Understanding the scoring

The TEF IRN is a positioning test that determines your level according to the CEFR.

Each test is graded on a scale of 0 to 499 points. The certificate details the scores per test, the associated CEFR level and your overall level, from A1 (elementary) to B2 (intermediate).

Score
Niveau CECRL
0 to 99 A1 not reached
100 to 199 A1
200 to 299 A2
300 to 399 B1
400 to 499 B2

Results are sent by email about 2 weeks after the test.

Please note: for a long-term resident card, an A2 level is required (B1 from 1 January 2026); for French nationality, a B1 level is required (B2 from 1 January 2026).

02

For listening comprehension, expose yourself regularly to French-language audio content (podcasts, videos, radio programmes).

03

On the day, take time to absorb the instructions: all the tests must take place on a single day. Take advantage of our free videos and our official mock exams.
