What is Linguaskill ?

Linguaskill is a standardized test designed for people who want to certify their English proficiency in everyday life or the workplace. Since 2019, it has replaced the old BULATS. It is adaptive, meaning that the difficulty of the questions increases or decreases depending on your answers.

There are two versions: Linguaskill General and Linguaskill Business. Both are designed by the Cambridge English department at the University of Cambridge. It is recognized and accepted by many businesses, colleges, and universities around the world.

Results are generally available within 48 hours.

The 2 versions of Linguaskill

It comes in two versions, to choose according to your needs:

  • Linguaskill General : This version assesses your English proficiency in a real-life context. It is based on a variety of everyday situations (social interactions, higher education, travel, sports, etc.) and is primarily aimed at individuals who are considering emigrating to an English-speaking country to study or work.

  • Linguaskill Business : This version aims to certify your proficiency in business English. The tests are based on situations from the world of work and business. It is primarily intended for adults who want to have their English level recognized at work, for example, in the context of recruitment or internal mobility.

The Linguaskill tests

Both versions of Linguaskill are presented in the same format and assess the same knowledge. Only the topics covered differ depending on the version chosen (everyday life or the world of work).

The assessment is flexible: depending on your needs, you can choose to take one, two, or three tests. However, it is recommended that you take all modules to get a complete assessment of your knowledge.

The skills assessed are as follows:

  • Written and oral comprehension ( Reading & Listening );
  • Written expression ( Writing );
  • Oral expression ( Speaking ).

Reading and Listening

This adaptive test lasts between 60 and 85 minutes and consists of two parts. The difficulty of the questions increases based on your answers.

In the Listening test , you listen to audio recordings and answer two types of questions:

  • Listen and select : after listening to a short recording, you choose the correct answer from three options (sentences or images);
  • Extended listening : you listen to a long recording and answer a series of questions given in the order of the information heard.

In the Reading test , you have to read different types of texts and then answer five question formats:

  • Read and select: you read a short text (note, graphic, memo, letter, etc.) and choose from three options the sentence that best matches the content;
  • Gapped sentences: you complete a gapped sentence by choosing the correct word from four options;
  • Multiple-choice gap-fill : you fill in a gap-filled text with the correct words, by selecting from several options offered;
  • Open gap-fill : you fill in a gap-filled text without a suggested answer;
  • Extended reading: You read a medium-length text and answer several multiple-choice questions.

Written expression ( Writing )

Lasting 45 minutes, the written expression test contains two parts:

  • Email: you write an email or a note (at least 50 words) following the instructions given;
  • Long text : you write a longer text (at least 180 words) on a given topic. In the Linguaskill Business version, the test focuses on writing a letter or report for a colleague or client.

Oral expression ( Speaking )

This 15-minute test is carried out using a headset and a microphone and includes five exercises:

  • Interview: you answer 5 short questions about yourself;
  • Reading aloud: you read 8 sentences aloud;
  • Long turn 1: you speak on a given subject (40 seconds of preparation and 1 minute of oral production);
  • Long turn 2: you comment on a graph (1 minute of preparation and 1 minute of oral production);
  • Communication activity: you answer 5 questions on the same theme, giving your point of view.

Understanding the notation

It assesses four language skills: written and oral comprehension, written and oral expression.

Each module is scored individually according to the Cambridge English Scale , a scale ranging from 82 to 180+ points. If you take multiple modules, an average overall score is calculated.

The scores are then converted to the European CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) scale, according to the following correspondence:

Linguaskill Score

CEFR level

82 to 99

Pre A1

100 to 119

A1

120 to 139

A2

140 to 159

B1

160 to 179

B2

More than 180 points

C1 and above

At the end of the assessment, you will receive a detailed results report which indicates:

  • Your score and the corresponding CEFR level for each skill assessed;
  • Your overall average score and overall CEFR level;
  • A description of the four parts associated with the results obtained.

Typically, companies and academic institutions require a Linguaskill certificate (General or Business) that is less than two years old. Since the results reflect your proficiency at a given time, you can retake it as many times as you like, with no time limit between sessions.
