What is the TOEFL ?

The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the language level of non-English speaking applicants who wish to enter higher education in English.

Enjoying widespread international recognition, the test is accepted by more than 13,000 schools and universities in over 200 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The TOEFL is developed and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

The different versions of the TOEFL

There are several versions of the TOEFL test:

  • The TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test) : accessible to the general public, this version is the most internationally recognized, the most widespread (more than 40 million people have taken it worldwide), but also known for being the most difficult. It exists in two other formats: the TOEFL iBT Home Edition (which can be taken online, at home) and the TOEFL iBT Paper Edition (the paper version);
  • The TOEFL ITP (Institution Testing Program) : This version of the test is reserved for schools and higher education institutions that have signed a contract with ETS Global. It is intended for students who wish to participate in an academic exchange to study abroad. The TOEFL ITP exists in two levels: Level 1 (Intermediate-Advanced) and Level 2 (Beginner-Intermediate);
  • The TOEFL Junior : intended for students over 11 years old who are learning English in middle or high school;
  • TOEFL Primary : Designed for children over 8 years old who are learning English in primary school.

The TOEFL tests

TOEFL tests vary depending on the version taken. This article only covers the TOEFL iBT and TOEFL ITP tests.

TOEFL iBT tests

The TOEFL iBT assesses the four fundamental language skills:

  • Reading Comprehension : You must read several academic texts (excerpts from university textbooks), then answer 10 multiple-choice questions per text. The test lasts 35 minutes ;
  • Listening : You must listen to various audio documents (excerpts from lectures and conversations between students), then answer comprehension questions. The test lasts 36 minutes;
  • Speaking : the test has two parts: you must first give your opinion on a given subject, then express yourself on the texts read and the audios heard during the written and oral comprehension tests. This part lasts 16 minutes;
  • Written Expression ( Writing ) : The test also contains two parts: you must read a short text and listen to a lecture, then write a text about what you have read and heard (approximately 20 minutes). You must then express your opinion on the subject in writing (approximately 10 minutes). The test lasts 29 minutes.

The TOEFL ITP tests

The TOEFL ITP consists of 3 parts:

  • Listening comprehension : This test assesses your ability to understand spoken English used in higher education institutions. You must listen to various audio documents (short or long conversations, university lectures), then answer 50 questions. For level 1, this part is marked out of 68 points and lasts 35 minutes (30 questions, 50 points and 22 minutes for level 2).
  • Written expression ( Structure and Written expression ) : through 40 questions, the test assesses your knowledge of English grammar and syntax. For level 1, this part is marked out of 68 points and lasts 25 minutes (25 questions, 50 points and 17 minutes for level 2);
  • Reading comprehension : This test measures your ability to read and understand academic texts in English. You must read five independent texts (excerpts from university textbooks) and then answer 10 questions per text. For Level 1, this part is marked out of 67 points and lasts 55 minutes (40 questions, 50 points, and 31 minutes for Level 2).

Understanding the notation

The TOEFL iBT and TOEFL ITP use different scoring systems.

TOEFL iBT Scoring

Each of the four TOEFL iBT tests is marked out of 30 points, for a total score marked out of 120 points.

Depending on the grade you received, your certificate of achievement will indicate a skill level and a brief description of your performance. Here are the skill levels corresponding to each grade:

Test

TOEFL ITP Scoring

The three TOEFL ITP tests are scored individually, and then an average of the three scores is calculated. The average score obtained is multiplied by 10. For level C1, the calculation is different and aligned with the levels of the European CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) scale.

To reach CEFR levels A2 to C1, you must obtain at least the following marks (for level 1):

Once logged into your candidate account, you will be able to access all the dates and locations and select the session of your choice.

For the TOEFL iBT, you can choose between taking the test in a test center or remotely from home (TOEFL Home Edition ).

We recommend that you register at least six weeks before your desired date to guarantee your place and receive your certificate of results before the application deadlines set by the institutions.

Why take the TOEFL ?

The TOEFL test is the most widely recognized English language test in the international academic world.

Its most widely used version, the TOEFL iBT, is accepted by more than 11,500 universities in over 160 countries. The test is often required for admission to English-language higher education programs, applications for scholarships or certifications, or student or work visa applications.

The TOEFL ITP, for its part, is primarily used by universities and colleges. It allows institutions to assess students' language levels for placement purposes, ongoing assessment, or end-of-course validation.

Whatever your goal, the TOEFL is a reliable benchmark for demonstrating your skills in written and spoken English as used in an academic setting.

Tips for passing the TOEFL

The TOEFL is a demanding test, especially if you're aiming for a high score to get into a selective institution. Before you begin your preparation, find out the score required by the university or organization you're applying to: this will help you set a goal score.

Next, familiarize yourself with the test format and the instructions specific to each section, and then structure your TOEFL preparation over several weeks. Ideally, alternate between skill-based review and timed practice tests to practice completing each section within the allotted time.

To progress quickly, expose yourself to academic English regularly: listen to university lectures, watch course videos and read in English as often as possible.

On the day, make sure you arrive fit and relaxed. Good stress management and a clear understanding of how the exams will unfold will help you approach them in the best possible conditions.
