What is the TOEIC Listening & Reading test?

The TOEIC Listening & Reading (L&R) is a professional English comprehension test designed by ETS. It measures your ability to understand spoken and written English in common workplace situations.

It is the best-known and most widely requested version of the TOEIC, frequently required by schools, universities, and employers to certify English proficiency.

Entirely multiple-choice, it lasts approximately 2 hours, and its results are valid for 2 years.

The TOEIC L&R sections

The test consists of two multiple-choice sections taken consecutively.

Listening (listening comprehension)
45 min · 100 questions

You listen to several audio recordings (one listening only), then answer 100 multiple-choice questions divided into four parts:

  • Part 1— Photographs
  • Part 2— Question–response
  • Part 3— Conversations
  • Part 4— Short talks or announcements
Reading (reading comprehension)
75 min · 100 questions

You read various documents (notices, emails, articles, etc.), then answer 100 questions at your own pace, divided into three parts:

  • Part 5— Incomplete sentences
  • Part 6— Text completion
  • Part 7— Reading comprehension

Understand the rating

The TOEIC L&R is scored from 10 to 990 points (from 5 to 495 for each of the two sections). The score is then mapped to the European CEFR scale.

You will receive a certificate detailing your results, available the same day for the digital test or within 10 to 15 days for the paper format.

How to register for the TOEIC L&R

Registration is completed directly on the ETS Global website by clicking “Register for a test.”

Select the TOEIC Listening & Reading, choose a date and a nearby test center, then enter your personal information.

For the public program, upload an ID photo that will appear on your official certificate.

After confirming, proceed with online payment.

Registration is done on the ETS Globalwebsite. It is recommended to register 2 to 3 months in advance to secure your place on the desired date.

Where can I take the TOEIC L&R?

The TOEIC L&R can be taken at many authorized centers worldwide, either on a computer or on paper depending on the center. Test sessions are held throughout the year.
