What is the TOEIC Speaking & Writing test?

The TOEIC Speaking & Writing (S&W) is a professional English communication test developed by ETS. It assesses your ability to communicate orally and in writing in workplace situations.

It complements the TOEIC Listening & Reading, which focuses on comprehension, to provide an assessment of productive skills, which employers increasingly seek.

Its results are valid for 2 years.

The TOEIC S&W sections

The test consists of two speaking and writing tasks.

Speaking (oral expression)
20 min · 11 tasks

Assesses your ability to express yourself in English:

  • Read a text aloud— questions 1-2
  • Describe a picture— questions 3-4
  • Answer questions— questions 5-7
  • Answer using the information provided— questions 8-10
  • Express your opinion— question 11
Writing (written expression)
60 min · 8 questions

Assesses your ability to write clear sentences, organize your ideas, and present arguments:

  • Write a sentence based on a picture— questions 1-5
  • Reply to an email— questions 6-7
  • Write an argumentative essay— question 8

Understand the rating

Each skill (Speaking and Writing) is scored from 0 to 200 points. Each score corresponds to a proficiency level aligned with the CEFR.

You receive a certificate detailing your results for each skill, available quickly for the digital test.

How to register for the TOEIC S&W test
