CELPIP 2025 test training
What is CELPIP ?
The CELPIP, or Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program , is a computer-based language test designed to assess proficiency in English as used and spoken in Canada. It is intended for individuals wishing to apply for permanent residence in Canada or Canadian citizenship through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Designed and administered by Paragon Testing Enterprises, the CELPIP is one of the main English language tests accepted for immigration to Canada (along with the IELTS General Training). Results are available within 3 to 4 days.
The CELPIP is distinguished by the fact that the audio and video recordings of the test are recorded in spoken English with a North American accent.
The 2 versions of CELPIP
The CELPIP is available in two versions:
-
The CELPIP General assesses the four main English language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This version of the test is intended for candidates who want to certify their English level to apply for permanent residence in Canada approved by IRCC, but also for professional or academic reasons;
- The CELPIP General LS tests listening and speaking skills only. It is intended for candidates who wish to have their English level recognized in order to apply for Canadian citizenship through IRCC. The CELPIP General LS can also be taken in a professional context.
The CELPIP exams
The CELPIP test consists of several tests designed to assess English proficiency in professional and everyday situations. In both versions of the test, the tests are computer-based and take place in a single session.
The CELPIP General consists of 4 tests (lasting approximately 3 hours), while the CELPIP General LS only assesses the 2 oral skills (lasting 1 hour and 10 minutes):

CELPIP General LS (1h10) |

Listening
Lasting 47 to 55 minutes (for both versions of the test), the Listening test consists of listening to audio recordings on topics from everyday life and professional life. You can only listen to them once.
The test contains 38 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) of 4 options each, including one correct answer. The questions are divided into 6 parts (the test begins with an ungraded practice question):
- Part 1: Solving a problem (8 questions);
- Part 2: Everyday conversation (5 questions);
- Part 3: Information (6 questions);
- Part 4: Current Issue (5 questions);
- Part 5: Discussion (8 questions);
- Part 6: Different points of view (6 questions).
Reading comprehension
The reading comprehension test (for the CELPIP General exam only) lasts 55 to 60 minutes. You must read several texts, then answer 38 questions with 4 possible answers, including one correct answer, divided into 4 parts (you start the test with an ungraded practice question):
- Part 1: Reading correspondence (11 questions);
- Part 2: Reading to apply a diagram (8 questions);
- Part 3: Reading information (9 questions);
-
Part 4: Reading points of view (10 questions).
Written expression ( Writing)
The written expression test (only for the CELPIP General) lasts 53 to 60 minutes. It consists of two tasks:
- Task 1: Write an email (you must write an email of 150-200 words related to a given situation);
- Task 2: Answer survey questions (you must write a 150-200 word essay to defend your point of view in relation to a survey).
Oral expression ( Speaking)
The oral expression test is common to both versions of the CELPIP and lasts between 15 and 20 minutes. You must answer questions orally divided into 8 tasks (starting with an ungraded practice question):
- Task 1: Give advice;
- Task 2: Recount a personal experience;
- Task 3: Describe a scene;
- Task 4: Making predictions;
- Task 5: Compare and persuade;
- Task 6: Coping with a difficult situation;
- Task 7: Expressing your opinion;
- Task 8: Describe an unusual situation.
Depending on the task, you have 30 to 60 seconds to prepare and 60 to 90 seconds to speak. Your answers are recorded and then evaluated by a qualified examiner.
Understanding the notation
Each of the four CELPIP tests is graded individually. The candidate then receives a final score. For each test, the score can range from 3 (the lowest level) to 12 (the highest level).
If applicable, the score may be N/A (not administered: the candidate did not take the test) or M (minimal competence: the level is insufficient to be assessed).
For the Listening and Reading tests , the CELPIP level awarded depends on the number of correct answers. However, this correspondence varies slightly depending on the version of the test (General or General LS). Here is an example of correspondence between the CELPIP level awarded and the points obtained:
CELPIP level |
Listening Number of correct answers / 38 |
Reading Number of correct answers / 38 |

The Writing and Speaking tests are assessed based on several points: content and coherence, vocabulary used by the candidate, readability and execution of the different tasks.
These two tests are marked by qualified examiners trained to award a mark between 3 and 12 (or M if the level is insufficient), in accordance with a standard marking grid.
The CELPIP level is then aligned with the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB), which is the Canadian language skills reference system.
Results are delivered directly to candidates' online accounts, between 3 and 4 days after taking the test.

Why take the CELPIP ?
The CELPIP is an English language test specifically designed for candidates wishing to immigrate, study or work in Canada. Recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), it is required in several immigration programs, including Express Entry and the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
The CELPIP General LS version is also one of the tests accepted by IRCC for Canadian citizenship applications. Unlike other tests, the CELPIP is exclusively intended for candidates planning to immigrate to Canada, making it a strategic choice for those planning to settle permanently in the country.
Tips for passing the CELPIP
The CELPIP is a demanding test that requires serious preparation beforehand. Before you begin, check the minimum CLB level required for your immigration program.
Once you've defined your goal, you can begin your CELPIP preparation. First, familiarize yourself with the test format and the instructions specific to each exam. The official CELPIP website offers several useful resources.
Plan your revision over several weeks, alternating between targeted work on each test and practice tests to practice in conditions close to the exam.
As much as possible, expose yourself to North American English daily: watch Canadian series, listen to podcasts, or follow the country's news. The CELPIP assesses not only your English skills, but also your comfort with Canadian accents and expressions.
