How is the IELTS score calculated?
The IELTS test ( What is IELTS? ) is scored using a scale from 1 (lowest level) to 9 (highest level). This scale is the same for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training ( Why take IELTS? ).
Note for each part
- Listening : 40 questions, each question worth 1 point. The section is then brought back and marked out of 9.
- Reading : 40 questions, each question worth 1 point. The section is then re-scored and marked out of 9. The Academic format is considered more difficult for some questions.
Listening | Reading |
Note | Score |
5 | 16 |
6 | 23 |
7 | 30 |
8 | 35 |
Writing - You are given a score from 1 to 9 for each of these criteria:
- the correct answer to the question
- coherence and cohesion of the argument
- vocabulary used
- good use of grammar
Speaking - You are given a score from 1 to 9 for each of these criteria:
- fluidity
- lexicon
- grammar
- pronunciation
Then you have to calculate the average of the score obtained from all the criteria.
The graders will have a very detailed grid to assign you your score. You can see an example here .
General note
It is calculated based on the average of the marks out of 9 that you receive in each part. It will then be rounded to the nearest whole or half.
- 6.5 in Listening
- 6.5 at Reading
- 5 in Writing
- 7 in Speaking = 6.25, giving an overall score of 6.5
