What are the language requirements for a Canadian study visa for Indian students?
According to figures from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, 215,720 Indian international students were granted study permits in Canada between January and August 2021 ( Source ).
Since May 2021, and to consider applying for a Canadian study visa, Indian students must now pass the TEF or IELTS General Training.
To apply, Indian students (as well as students from Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Senegal, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vietnam) can use the Student Direct Stream (SDS).
Indeed, as part of the Student Direct Stream, students must present proof of results in English (IELTS General Training) or French (TEF) required for the student visa:
- a score IELTS General Training 6 or more (CLB) in each of the 4 sections (be sure to check your school/university requirements).
- a score TEF of at least 7 (CLB) for each of the 4 required sections.
Good to know : Having a TEF certificate will increase your employment opportunities in Canada for the rest of your studies. It will also help you earn points for a Canadian permanent residence application (you can earn up to 54 points depending on your score on the four mandatory sections of the TEF).
