What is the DELF?

THE Diploma of French Language Studies (DELF) is a diploma awarded by the French Ministry of National Education. It validates the candidate's level of proficiency in French as a foreign language in the following language skills: written and oral expression, written and oral comprehension. It is a diploma recognized worldwide and valid for life.

Six different diplomas

If we talk about the DELF for the sake of simplicity, we should actually be talking about the DELFs. There are in fact several diplomas, each corresponding to a level . The DELF thus exists in different degrees of difficulty in order to provide an offer adapted to all ages and all audiences.

The different DELF levels follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​( CEFR levels ): there is a diploma for each level and for each audience.

  • DELF Prim: for children (7-12 years old). Level A1-A2.
  • DELF Junior: for adolescents (12-17 years old) in schools. Level A1 to B2
  • DELF School: for teenagers (12-17 years old). Level A1 to B2
  • DELF General Public: for adults. Level A1 to B2
  • DELF Pro (professional option): for people aiming for professional integration in France or in a French-speaking environment. Level A1 to B2
  • DALF (advanced French language diploma): adult in university or professional situation. Level C1-C2

An internationally recognized test

The DELF is one of the most widely used French language tests by education ministries in over 164 countries worldwide. It is offered by over 1,000 testing centers. Holding one of these diplomas can be very valuable, whether for pursuing further studies in France, Canada, or another French-speaking country, or for adding to a resume.
