What is the TEF IRN?
1- The test
From January 3, 2022, the TEF Naturalization and TEF Resident tests will be merged into a single test: the TEF IRN (Integration, Residence and Nationality)
Aimed at foreigners over 16 years old, this test is required by the Ministry of the Interior for those who wish to:
- Obtain French nationality (B1 level required)
- Acquire a one or two-year residence permit (level A1 required)
- Obtain a 10-year resident permit (level A2 required)
Regardless of the objective a candidate wishes to achieve among the 3 objectives mentioned above, all candidates registered for the TEF IRN take the same test.
2- The tests
The TEF IRN includes 4 compulsory tests:

Listening comprehension : 17 questions
(4 answer choices, only one correct answer) -
Reading comprehension : 13 questions
(4 answer choices, only one correct answer) - Written expression : 2 exercises
- Oral expression : 2 exercises
Regarding the duration of the test, it lasts 1 hour 20 minutes in total. The duration of each test is detailed below:
- Listening comprehension: 10 minutes
- Reading comprehension: 30 minutes
- Written expression: 30 minutes
- Oral expression: 10 minutes
