TOEFL iBT Reading - Overview

According to the official instructions of ETS TOEFL , the TOEFL IBT Reading must assess the candidate's ability to understand academic texts in English.

  • 36 to 56 questions in 60 to 80 minutes in a single block
  • 3 to 4 independent passages of approximately 700 words – 12 to 14 questions per passage (university texts)
  • Rating from 0 to 30 or 25% of the final grade ( How is the TOEFL IBT score calculated )

TOEFL IBT Reading - Topics

The texts that will be offered to you during the exam are taken from university-level textbooks and deal with subjects that are taught at university such as history, science and sociology.

However, it's not the themes that are important, because the point isn't knowing them. Indeed, to appear on the official exam, each question is tested on a representative sample of testers. To be retained, a question must maintain the same proportion of correct answers regardless of the testers.

TOEFL IBT Reading - Questions

Beyond testing your understanding of English, the TOEFL IBT Reading is an aptitude test that assesses your logical abilities. Keep in mind that the questions in the Reading section of the TOEFL IBT are difficult even for an English speaker.

Almost all of the questions are multiple choice questions with only 1 correct answer out of 4 answer choices and the questions are worth the same number of points.
