The differences between the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL ITP

The TOEFL is an English test for non-native English speakers that allows them to study abroad. ( What is the TOEFL? )

There are two versions of the TOEFL:

  • the TOEFL iBT (Internat Based Test) which is taken on a computer and marked out of 120.
  • The TOEFL ITP (Paper Based), formerly called PBT, is taken on paper and marked out of 677.

The TOEFL ITP is considered easier than the TOEFL iBT. However, it is only intended for educational institutions ; you cannot take it as an independent candidate. It is only used for managing academic exchanges, when partner institutions have decided to accept it.

The TOEFL iBT is required as part of the application process at all English-speaking universities. The TOEFL iBT is also recognized for academic exchange programs. If your school typically requires a TOEFL ITP, it will also accept the TOEFL iBT. It can be taken as an independent candidate.
