The Differences Between TOEFL iBT and TOEFL ITP

The TOEFL is an English test for non-native English speakers that allows them to study abroad. ( What is the TOEFL? )

There are two versions of the TOEFL :

  • THE TOEFL iBT (Internat Based Test) which is carried out on a computer and marked out of 120.
  • THE TOEFL ITP (Paper Based), formerly called PBT, is made on paper and rated out of 677.

The TOEFL ITP is considered easier than the TOEFL iBT. However, it is only intended for educational establishments , you cannot take it as a private candidate. It is only used for the management of university exchanges, when partner establishments have decided to accept it.

The TOEFL iBT is required at all English-speaking universities as part of the application process. The TOEFL iBT is also recognized for academic exchanges. If your school usually requires a TOEFL ITP, it will also accept the TOEFL iBT. It can be taken as a private candidate .
