What are the differences between TOEFL and IELTS?
Although TOEFL and IELTS are two similar tests, there are 6 main differences between these tests:
TOEFL iBT | IELTS |
Computer-based exam | Paper exam |
Duration 4 hours | Duration 2H45 |
Rated out of 120 | Rated on a scale of 0 to 9 |
North American accent used | Different international accents used |
Oral expression: computer recording | Oral expression: facing the examiner |
Multiple choice questions | Multiple choice questions, Fill-in-the-blanks, True/False, Answers to link and flowcharts |
The main difference between the TOEFL and the IELTS is the speaking portion. For the TOEFL, the candidate speaks into a microphone and the recording is sent to the examiner. For the IELTS, the candidate speaks directly to the examiner.
Another point: there are currently few IELTS test centers in France. This can be a deciding factor in your choice of test, which will depend on where you live.
