The test integrated essay question of TOEFL IBT Writing  is a synthesis of a text and a soundtrack.

This part is divided into several stages :

1. You have 3 minutes to read a passage on an academic subject.


2. You will hear an excerpt from a lecture on the same topic as the text


3. A question is displayed


4. You must produce a summary of the course by linking the elements of the text to answer the question.

You will be faced with 2 types of questions :

  • The question that contrasts the course and the text: “Summarize the points made in the reading, being sure to explain how they oppose specific points made in the reading passage.”
  • The question that supports the information in the text: “Summarize the points made in the reading, being sure to explain how they answer the specific problems presented in the reading passage.”

For both types of questions, the answer is simple to structure. You need to summarize the lecture into different arguments, explaining how each argument opposes or supports the text.

TOEFL IBT Writing - Standard questions: free expression

The free expression test of the TOEFL IBT Writing is a writing test where you have to answer a question using your personal knowledge and ideas.

Examples

Some typical questions from the free expression of the TOEFL IBT Writing  :

  • “Do you agree or disagree”: You will be asked to give an opinion on a topic. A few sentences after the question will describe the purpose of the topic.
  • Preference for A or B: You have the description of two things. You must express your preference for one or the other.
  • Description : In relation to a subject, you describe a personal experience or an imagined situation

TOEFL IBT Writing - Methodology

Your answer should be structured in the form :

  • Introduction : summary of the subject in one or two sentences then the announcement of the plan
  • Argument 1 + example
  • Argument 2 + example
  • Conclusion which summarizes your answer with an opening of the subject
