How does the TOEFL iBT work?

TOEFL preparation  is, as with any test, very important. Online platforms, such as PrepMyFuture exists to help you improve your vocabulary, grammar, listening, etc. Knowing the exam conditions will allow you to be less stressed and more comfortable putting to good use everything you have learned on the platform.

We will now describe to you how a TOEFL iBT session takes place.

TOEFL Procedure - The Day Before

We recommend checking the time and date of your session on your confirmation form on the ETS website. Also, remember to bring the ID you used during registration.

TOEFL Test Procedure - D-Day

As with every exam, it is recommended to arrive 30 to 40 minutes early. If you are late, you will not be able to take the test and no refund will be issued.

After registering your identity information and depositing your belongings in a safe place, you will be able to access the examination room. The examiners will provide you with a rough draft, which will be destroyed at the end of the session.

The total duration of the test is 4 hours, but you will be given a break after 2 hours. This 10-minute break will give you the opportunity to refocus and refresh yourself.

The room resembles an open space with computers arranged in it. The computers are separated by partitions to prevent cheating.

Each station is equipped with a headset for listening and a microphone for the Speaking portion. All participants answer questions simultaneously, so during the "Speaking" portion, you may be disturbed by background noise caused by other candidates' answers. It's therefore important to practice in these conditions to avoid being distracted.

The different parts follow one another like this:

• Listening
• Reading
• Writing
• Speaking

You won't be able to leave questions aside and go back and deal with them.

The test is timed during the 4-hour exam. However, the timer stops during the 2-hour break and resumes at the end of the break. Outside of this break, going to the restroom is permitted, but the timer continues to run.

After the 4-hour mark, the timer stops and you can no longer answer questions. It is therefore advisable to practice under actual exam conditions. PrepMyFuture offers you the opportunity to take several practice TOEFL exams under conditions identical to those of the actual exam.

When the session is over, you leave the room. Your score certificates will be sent directly to the recipients you selected during registration.
