TOEFL iBT Listening - Overview
According to official instructions, the TOEFL IBT Reading , the section TOEFL IBT Listening measures the candidate's ability to understand conversations and speeches in English.

TOEFL IBT Listening - Structure
- 34 to 51 questions of 60 to 90 minutes depending on the number of audio tracks to listen to
- 6 to 9 audio tapes to listen to, each audio tape is followed by 5 to 6 questions
- 2 types of audio tapes: University lecture and university campus discussion
- Each audio track is preceded by a short introductory sentence and a photo allowing you to identify the context
- You can't go back
- Rating from 0 to 30 or 25% of the final grade ( How is the TOEFL IBT score calculated )
- You can only listen to the audio track once. It is not possible to pause the audio track.
TOEFL IBT Listening - Questions
Just like the TOEFL IBT Reading , the questions do not only test your understanding of English. The questions will be much less difficult than those in the part TOEFL IBT Reading but another type of difficulty will come into play: your ability to memorize the speech.
Indeed, the soundtracks are long and many questions come back to details of them. Your abilities to concentration and of memorization will therefore be important in this section.

Here is a list of the main skills tested in the Listening section :
- Overall understanding of the context
- Memorizing details
- concentration while listening to long soundtracks
- Understanding idiomatic expressions
The questions are in multiple-choice format with four answer choices, of which only one is correct. Some questions require you to select two answer options; this will be clearly indicated. About a quarter of the questions allow you to listen to an excerpt from the speech again. These questions generally focus on an idiomatic expression.
