CEFR Levels: European Framework for Modern Languages
The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is a tool published by the Council of Europe that groups all language levels and their corresponding skills. It was designed to standardize language assessment across all European countries.
The 6 CEFR Levels
The scale ranges from the lowest to the highest level: A1 < A2 < B1 < B2 < C1 < C2. Each level is defined by specific skills that must be mastered to progress to the next level.
- A1 and A2: basic user. Able to understand and use familiar expressions and simple statements.
- B1 and B2: independent user. Able to understand complex texts and express themselves fluently on various topics.
- C1 and C2: proficient user. Complete mastery of the language in demanding contexts.
What Are These Levels For?
These levels facilitate academic exchanges and international recruitment: a candidate at B2 level in English has the same skills whether they are French, German, or Japanese. In France, level A2 is required for the middle school diploma, and level B2 to validate an engineering degree.
How to Validate Your Level?
To validate a CEFR level, you must pass a recognized certification. In English: TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS, BULATS. In French: TEF, TCF, DELF.
