CAMBRIDGE B2 First (FCE) 2025 test practice
What is the CAMBRIDGE B2 First (FCE)?
The Cambridge B2 First, formerly known as the FCE ( First Certificate in English ), is a qualification exam awarded by the Cambridge English department of the University of Cambridge. It certifies English language skills corresponding to level B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
This certification is aimed at anyone, regardless of nationality, who wishes to have their B2 level of English officially recognized in an academic, professional or personal context.
Cambridge certifications are recognized by more than 25,000 higher education institutions, businesses, and government organizations worldwide. In France, the B2 First is accepted by many business schools, universities, IAE (Institute of Business Administration), and engineering schools. It is also valued in the workplace for positions requiring a good command of written and spoken English.
Once obtained, the B2 First is valid for life.
The CAMBRIDGE B2 First (FCE) exams
The Cambridge B2 First consists of 4 separate tests.
Reading Comprehension (Reading & Use of English) - 1h15
This first test consists of 7 parts for a total of 52 questions in different formats (sentences to be completed with or without a clause, multiple-choice questions, sentences to be put in order, etc.). It assesses your ability to understand different types of texts in English (newspaper articles, literary extracts, etc.), as well as your mastery of vocabulary and grammar.
Written expression (Writing) - 1h20
The written expression test is divided into two parts. You must write an essay (150 words) on a set theme, then a second text (150 words) of your choice from several formats (letter, article, review, short story, etc.).
The objective is to measure your ability to express yourself in writing in a clear, organized and reasoned manner.
Listening Comprehension - 40 minutes
The third test consists of four parts and 30 questions. You will have to answer different question formats: questions about the meaning of the extract, sentence completions, correspondences between a statement and its speaker, and multiple-choice questions.
It measures your ability to understand a variety of audio documents (everyday conversations, interviews, news programs, etc.).
Oral expression (Speaking) - 14 minutes
The final test takes place in pairs with another candidate, in the presence of two examiners. It includes four parts (questions on a topic from everyday life, descriptions of photographs and two discussions with the other candidate on a given issue).
It assesses your ability to express yourself orally in a clear and organized manner and to adapt to different communication situations.
Understanding the notation
The Cambridge B2 First is based on the Cambridge English Scale , a scale of scores allowing you to situate your level of English according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Each test is marked separately. At the end of the test, a total score of between 160 and 190 points is calculated: this determines your final grade (called a “ grade ”) and the corresponding CEFR level.
Here are the equivalences between the total score obtained, the final grade and the CEFR level:
Total score (on the Cambridge English Scale) |
Final grade B2 First |
CEFR level |
180 - 190 |
Grade A |

173 - 179 |
Grade B |
B2 |
160 - 172 |
Grade C |

140- 159 |
Level B1 |

If your total score is less than 160 points, you will not be able to obtain the B2 First certification. However, you will be issued a B1 level certificate.
Below 140 points, no certification is awarded, but the total score appears on the results certificate.
Beyond 180 points, you can obtain level C1 via a gateway.
Results are available within 5 to 10 days for computer-based exams and 4 to 6 weeks for paper-based exams. The Statement of Results is sent to the test center approximately 3 weeks after the scores are published, which will then send it to you by mail.
