01

What is CELPIP-General?

CELPIP-General is the version of CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) that assesses the four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Designated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), it is required, among other things, for permanent residence applications and accepted by many employers and professional regulatory bodies.

Fully computer-based, it is completed in a single session lasting approximately three hours.

03

The CELPIP-General test sections

The four skills are assessed during a single session conducted entirely on a computer.

Listening (oral comprehension)
≈ 47-55 min

Several sections based on audio recordings (conversations, information, viewpoints), followed by multiple-choice questions.

Reading (written comprehension)
≈ 55-60 min

Reading various documents (correspondence, information, viewpoints) with multiple-choice questions.

Writing (written expression)
≈ 53-60 min · 2 tasks

Two writing tasks: an email and a response to a survey.

Speaking (oral expression)
≈ 15-20 min · 8 tasks

Eight speaking tasks recorded on a computer (describing, expressing an opinion, giving advice, etc.).

04

Understand the rating

Each skill is assessed on the CELPIP scale, from level M to 12, which directly corresponds to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (NCLC / CLB).

CELPIP level (= CLB)
CEFR level
10 to 12 Advanced proficiency
7 to 9 Good autonomy
4 to 6 Intermediate level
M to 3 Beginner level

Your results are generally available within 4 to 5 business days. Check the level required by your program (IRCC, professional regulatory body, etc.).
