What is the TOEFL?

Are you a student looking to go abroad? You've probably heard of the TOEFL . Indeed, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is the most widely recognized English language test for non-native speakers in the world.

The TOEFL assesses your ability to understand and communicate in English in an academic setting. The TOEFL is a required test for students studying at English-speaking universities. American, English-speaking Canadian, English-speaking, and Australian universities require a minimum score before applying.

Since the TOEFL is a globally recognized certification, it can also be used on your resume as part of your job search. It's not a job-specific certification like the TOEIC , but it's still well-recognized in the job market. There are two types of TOEFL:

  • The TOEFL iBT
  • The TOEFL ITP

The TOEFL IBT is scored out of 120 and is considered the most difficult. It lasts 4 hours and consists of 4 parts:

TOEFL ITP

This variant of the TOEFL is intended exclusively for educational institutions. You cannot take the TOEFL ITP as an independent candidate; it is only administered by your school in paper format. Furthermore, the ITP score can only be used for academic exchanges if the partner university accepts the ITP score, which is not always the case.

The TOEFL ITP measures your listening and reading comprehension. It is considered less difficult and is shorter (1 hour 55 minutes) than the TOEFL iBT.

The TOEFL ITP score ranges from 310 to 677. It is divided into two parts:

THE TOEFL is restricted to the university setting. Foreign universities require a minimum score that they set themselves. Thus, depending on the reputation and level of the foreign university, the minimum score will be higher or lower. The goal, however, is to obtain the best possible score.

The score of the TOEFL is taken into account in the Visa application file. No negotiation is possible, you must have the required score.

THE TOEFL This is your passport to study anywhere in the world. Like any passport, it has a validity period. ETS keeps your results for two years. Your level evolves over these two years, whether positively or negatively. It is therefore necessary to retake the test after this period.
