Correspondences between CELPIP scores and CLB levels
The CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) uses a scoring scale ranging from M (minimal competence insufficient to be assessed) to 12 (expert level). Each score corresponds to a CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) level, the Canadian national reference for English language proficiency.
How is the CELPIP score calculated?
For the Listening and Reading tests: each test consists of 38 multiple-choice questions. A correct answer is worth 1 point, and an incorrect answer does not deduct points. The total number of correct answers is then converted into a CELPIP score (from 3 to 12), according to an equivalency table that may vary slightly between test versions.
For the Writing and Speaking tests: these are scored by qualified raters trained to apply a standardized scoring rubric. The score awarded is also between 3 and 12 (or M if the level is insufficient).
CELPIP and CLB correspondences
CELPIP scores align directly with CLB levels. These correspondences are used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to assess the language skills of immigration and citizenship applicants. The minimum required CLB level varies depending on the targeted immigration program (Express Entry, Francophone Mobility, etc.).
CELPIP results are available online within 3 to 5 business days after taking the test.
