Why is the adaptive TOEIC shorter?
The adaptive TOEIC has fewer questions than the classic TOEIC, which explains its reduced duration of 1 hour compared to 2 hours for the standard version.
Compared structure
The classic TOEIC L&R version offers a total of 200 questions (100 in Listening, 100 in Reading). The adaptive version offers fewer because its multi-stage adaptive format adjusts the question level for each candidate.
For each section (Listening and Reading), the adaptive test is conducted in two units:
- A first unit common to all candidates.
- A second unit whose difficulty level is adapted based on the results obtained in the first unit: easy module or difficult module.
Same score level, fewer questions
Despite this reduced number of questions, the adaptive TOEIC offers the same score level and difficulty as the classic version. The scoring scale (5 to 495 per section, 10 to 990 total) is identical. The accuracy of the assessment is maintained thanks to the adaptation mechanism, which targets questions where they will be most discriminating for each candidate.
