Can you retake the DELF?
Yes, it is entirely possible to retake the DELF. There is no mandatory waiting period between attempts. You can retake the test for two main reasons: you failed, or you want to improve your score at a level you have already attempted.
The fundamental difference with scored tests
This is the main difference between the DELF/DALF and scored tests like the TOEIC or TOEFL: getting a high score is less important than passing the level that truly corresponds to you. It is better to pass a DELF B1 with 50/100 than to get a DELF A2 with 70/100. Choosing the right level at registration is therefore essential.
Retaking a level already passed
You can also retake a level you have already obtained in order to improve your score. However, this involves an important condition: you must formally renounce the diploma already obtained in writing before retaking the test. If you fail this new attempt, you permanently lose the benefit of the initial diploma. This decision should therefore be carefully considered.
Tips before retaking
- Take a placement test to confirm that your level matches the diploma you wish to retake.
- Focus specifically on the sections where you scored less than 5/25 (elimination score).
- Make sure to achieve both 50/100 overall and at least 5/25 in each section.
